Giving Back To the Community: Betsy Devos’ Philanthropic Works

Betsy DeVos is a dedicated humanitarian, education advocate, and a proven leader. Together with her husband Dick, the DeVoses have been helping the less fortunate in society, funnelling millions of dollars towards education related courses throughout America and financing republican campaigns all over the country through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Founded in 1989, dbdvfoundation.org serves the community through leadership, arts, justice, and education. Betsy DeVos is actively involved with the community. She has sat on several boards of directors including the Philanthropy Roundtable, University of Maryland’s DeVos Institute for Arts Management, Foundation for Excellence in Education, the American Enterprise Institute, and ArtPrize. She is American Federation for Children former chairman.

Personal Life

Betsy is married to Dick DeVos, a community activist, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. The couple has four children, and five grandchildren. She attended Holland Christian High School and later Calvin College in Grand Rapids where she attained a Bachelor of Arts degree. Betsy DeVos is the former chair of The Windquest Group, a private management and investment firm based in Michigan. She has been active in the political scene for more than three decades. She is the four-time chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Until her recent appointment as the education secretary under the Trump administration, Betsy DeVos was using her political efforts to advance education choices.

Philanthropic Works

Many of the beneficiaries of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation are individuals, or organizations that come up with programs meant to support and uplift the community in either of the aforementioned fronts. Most of Betsy’s charitable activities reflect her family’s conservative Christian beliefs and political views. Here are some of the most recent philanthropic activities the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation has been involved in over the last two years.

The foundation funded Campbell Brown’s education site. The former CNN news anchor received $400,000 through The Partnership for Educational Justice her non-profit organization devoted to the enhancement of education for the less fortunate. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation has donated over one million dollars to the Washington DC-based American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy where Betsy DeVos sits on the board.

The foundation has also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a vast array of Christian related educational organizations including the Christian Schools International, Rehoboth Christian School Association, the Ada Christian School Society, and the Grand Rapids Christian School Association. Universities and colleges have not been left behind. The foundation has donated to numerous colleges and universities in Michigan and all over the country.

Some of the major beneficiaries are the University of Maryland’s college park foundation who received half a million, Davenport University, and Ferris State University both in Michigan received $155,000 and $113,500 respectively. The organization provides financial help to many other community organizations throughout America.
